The National Football League started in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The name change happened in 1922.

 In 1933 the National Football League (NFL) implemented a playoff season.  Prior to having a championship game there were other championship games in existence like the Rose Bowl game.

In 1920 Canton, Ohio is the birth place of the American Professional Football Conference. This is also where the football hall of fame takes place every year. World War II impacted the initial schedule for the league.
